NOMAN: pre-race ramblings

The time has come to write my usual pre-race piece. What is unusual this time is that I’m not writing about a marathon or an ultra! To be honest, I am not at all sure what to expect from rowing 200 miles across the Mediterranean Sea – I don’t even know if it will take us 2 days, 3 days or even 4 days?!

What I do know is that I am about as physically and materially prepared as I can be. Granted, I haven’t done much work on the rowing machine at all of late but I’m back out there running and getting some good feedback about my fitness from my heart rate and perceived effort during the run. I have an extremely well stocked mobile aid station coming on board the boat with me – I’ve got everything from coffee and jelly babies through to baby wipes and sun block. Mentally, well, as long as our GPS doesn’t fail on the boat and my shaky ocean navigation ‘skills’ get called into play then I’m not worried about much apart from getting really sunburned…

I’m sitting here having just taken a break from packing, I’ve opened a beer and after this is done I’m going to have a nap before getting up at 1900hrs, showering and then heading for a curry with my best friend. I’m also going to drop by and see my Dad for a swift ale before catching the  0000hrs train into London, I’m heading to Victoria station and from there I’ll be getting the 0200hrs train to London Gatwick airport arriving just in time for an early check-in at 0246hrs – from that point on it’s time to find a quiet corner, record a video diary [I’ll be putting together a video of this whole experience when I return] and then time to switch of the brain and waiting for the 0610hrs flight to Ibiza!

The race is now six days away, we’re due to set off at some point during the morning of Saturday 18th July but I thought I would write this now as it is unlikely I’ll find the time or inclination to write any blog posts whilst I’m in Ibiza or after I arrive in Barcelona! Therefore the next post you’ll probably read will be my race report sometime around July 26th or 27th. With that dear reader, I’m off to fret about my packing and to try and get a quick power nap in before dinner.

I will probably be tweeting, posting some photos to Instagram and updating my Facebook page until race day so you can see what I’m up to in Ibiza and, quite possibly, what I’m up to in Barcelona after I’ve arrived. If you want to follow the race live, via a GPS tracker, click here on Saturday morning!

Until next time, adieu!

Peace & Blessings
