25,260m 2:00:00 (NOMAN Ibiza-Barcelona, row session 5)

*39 days until the race*

As per my [loose] training plan I rowed for 2 hours on the ergo this morning – unlike the last 4 sessions I found this one pretty tough mentally. My mind kept wondering to my 30 minute splits because at the end of each I would be allowing myself up to 3 minutes rest. This is all I could think about for my first two half hour intervals and I had 1 minute rest after 30 minutes and the full 3 minutes after an hour.

During my 3rd 30 minute interval I was finding it extremely tough to keep up the pace and to keep my mind from wandering – I like to focus on the moment usually but for this thirty minutes all I could think about was getting some sunshine and a beer later. At the end of the interval I took 2 minutes rest, downed some water and berated myself for being so unfocused!

The final 30 minutes actually felt pretty good as I vowed to push on and remain calm, focused and totally in the moment. When the going got tough during this last 30 minutes I reminded myself that, unlike victims of HPV related cancers, I was lucky enough to be able to take short breaks from the pain and discomfort during my training sessions and I’ll be able to do the same during the race itself. I kept on mulling over the thought that this race is bigger than me, bigger than the other competitors and bigger than the Mediterranean – what it boils down to essentially is that we are all in this together and in 39 days time we’re rowing/racing from Ibiza to Barcelona awareness of the NOMAN campaign. Let’s face it, we all have a chance to make a difference be that by rowing across the Med or by donating to the NOMAN cause – by administering the HPV vaccine to boys and girls across the world as standard we can all be part of the push to eliminate 5% of cancers and the unnecessary suffering of future generations!

So, with the workout done, I headed into London to meet Gabrielle so we could test out the beer and food on offer at Somers Town Coffee House as I would like to put on my pre-race fundraising party here. I’m please to report that it seems perfect with regard to location and the fact it catches the sun at the front and the back of the premises! I’ll be contacting them next week to see if they’ll have me on either Saturday July 4th or Saturday July 11th – watch this space for further information as it should be a good afternoon/evening.
