*48 days until the race*
I woke early this morning and did some work on my training schedule and some fundraising stuff – I have the fortune of having today off from work so I wanted to make the most of it! Therefore, after visiting the store to pick up ingredients for Scott Jurek’s vegan chilli I headed over to my local leisure centre to take up a membership. The mission to go from runner to rower is now officially underway!!
I had to wait for a gym induction as nobody was available so I decided I’d swim for an hour and then try again – I really wanted to get on the rowing machine! However, with that said I’m very pleased that my swim went so well – I covered a fair bit of distance in an hour considering it has been many months since I swam for more than a half hour! I was also pleased with the Garmin Fenix2 – it felt less obtrusive than my old 910XT and I forgot I was wearing it after my first 500m. After emerging from the pool feeling pretty tired but very happy I headed back to the reception to try and get my induction out of the way so I could finally see what all this palaver about rowing machines is about! So, after a short induction…
I have to say that my first ever go on an rowing machine wasn’t so bad! I think I may need to up the resistance setting as I had it on 5/10 but my mind stayed focused on technique and form and I enjoyed listening to my iPod. The one thing I can say is that I’m definitely going to need my North Face mountain biking shorts for anything longer than an hour! I set up a workout with a pace boat to row with/against but as I had nothing to go by I decided to set the pacer at 4:00/500m and quickly left it behind.
Pace: 3:34/500m average
On Wednesday next week I’m looking forward to getting a chance to row on actual water, in the actual rowing boat. I’m also excited to get some expert advice on my technique and form. In the meantime I’ll keep watching YouTube tutorial videos and hitting the rowing machine for increasing amounts of time – tomorrow the plan is to row for an hour and a half with the resistance set to 6/10.
That’s it for today dear reader. I hope you’ll continue to read the blog whilst I’m on this short interlude from ultra running!
Peace & Blessings x
