5.2km 22:42 (Ox Ultra 56k, session 13)

I’ve been sidelined with a virus for 12 days and in those 12 days it seems the weather has been taunting me almost every day – blue skies, sunshine and temperatures between 17 and 21 degrees Celsius which to me sounds like perfect training weather! Add to this the fact I start my new job tomorrow and the loss of the past 12 days is even more galling. But, really, honestly, at this moment in time I don’t care about any of that! I am just glad to be back out there and running! I can honestly say that an enforced rest has most likely done me some good and I am still really looking forward to running the Ox Ultra in 2 weeks, I am also still planning to line up with the express intention of bringing down my 50k PR and running the best race I can on the day.

I laced up my road shoes because I knew that I’d have less zeal to run far on the unforgiving surface – this was a mental battle in itself as I really wanted to run as many laps as I felt like on the 1.5km trail loop at the top of my street! Anyway, the sun was shining and there was a slight breeze to take the edge of the sun and it felt great to put one foot in front of the other. I ran entirely on feel and I was feeling reasonably good until 3km when I started to get pain in my shoulders and lower back, clearly the byproducts of too much lying down and sitting over the previous 12 days – at this point I started to slow and was hoping to get home still running! But, as I got the bottom of my street, about 100 metres from finishing, the ultrarunner in me compelled me to push on for a short extra loop up the next street and the back down my own!

All in all my  legs feel awesome! My breathing was a little shallow due to a residual post-virus cough but with exactly 2 weeks until Ox Ultra, I hope the enforced rest will prove a blessing in disguise!! I aim to get back to doing a lot of standing and walking at work this week and will get back to my usual routine of taking the stairs over the elevator or escalator, yoga will also be back into my daily routine which will hopefully go some way to restoring the strength in my back and shoulders.
