Workout Soundtrack: Grateful Dead – ‘Greatest Hits’
1.5km 6:45 (Frankfurt Marathon, session 2 – injured, trapped spinal nerve)
After last week’s Monday run I went to see my physio for some acupuncture and massage on the Tuesday. As suspected I’ve a trapped R3 spinal nerve and slight inflammation of L3. I was prescribed a week off running along with a daily exercise routine.
However, today’s run didn’t go so well after my week off. In fact, the past week hasn’t felt too great for my lower back at all! Thankfully the exercises I was prescribed have taken the pressure off the nerve which means my knee is no longer stiff but for some reason the area around my lumbar feels bruised and my gluteal muscles (butt cheeks) are feeling like rocks. As the week has progressed the pain and aching has subsided quite a lot which was enough for me to decide to head out today.
I stepped out, did some stretching and some high knees drills and then set out on my run. Within fifty metres I felt a ping in my right knee and by about one hundred metres it had stiffened significantly, bringing with it an almighty tightening of my right glute. I tried speeding up to see if that would help – it didn’t. I tried slowing down to see if that would help – it didn’t. Therefore I maintained a pace of 4:30 and ran around my block which amounts to 1.5km. I can’t say that I was in pain during the run but it was definitely uncomfortable and there was no way I could have carried on without the discomfort turning to pain – the spectre of delaying my marathon training any further was never far from my mind so I was glad to get home, do my physio exercises, shower and lie down for a while. Thankfully the stiffness in my knee and the tightness in my glute eased off really quickly which does actually mean I’m recovering as before both of these feelings would remain for up to twenty four hours.
Oh well, better luck next time! I think, at a conservative estimate, I will try my next run on Sunday. In the meantime it’s back to the exercise mat and working on some upper body strength!
Happy Monday y’all! Hope the week treats thee well.
