Saturday 8th February 2014

Well, I most certainly got back in the running game on Thursday after work but there were a few things I did not take into consideration before undertaking a double for my first session in just over a month:

  1. Stretching – necessary, useful, avoids muscle tightness post-workout.
  2. Muscle memory relapse – my muscles haven’t been used for running since January 1st. Maybe they’d appreciate a more gentle reintroduction.
  3. Compression – putting on my compression socks after my post-workout shower would have been a really great idea considering points 1 and 2.
  4. Self-massage – again, considering points 1 and 2 and the distance I ran, this would have been a fantastic idea combined with point 3.

Because I did none of the above I woke up yesterday to find I had aches and pains not just in my calf muscles but also around my shoulders and a little in the lower back. My feet also felt a bit battered! So it was that I spent yesterday gingerly walking up and down stairs, indoors and outdoors and gently tackling various inclines.

Today I’ve woken up with less discomfort around my body but still with very sore calf muscles and I’ll be attacking those with my foam roller, massage ball and compression socks for most of the day – I don’t care that I’m due to be on a Late shift from 1400hrs, sometimes you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do and if that means getting some odd looks from colleagues and clients alike then so be it!

One thing is for certain I will, come Hell or high water, go for a short and gentle run on the ‘morrow because my body needs to get used to the idea, again, that what it was made for was to run!

Anyway dear reader, that’s it from me today. I hope you’re enjoying the weekend 🙂

Peace & Blessings
