My alarm went off this morning and although my eyes opened my brain did not engage for about half an hour! I just lay there actually wanting to get up, drink a coffee and go for a swim but at the same time really just wanting to go back to sleep for a few more hours – eventually I found some sort of motivation and swung my legs out, placed my feet on the floor and pulled on some clothes. As soon as I was standing I kept repeating to myself “Swimming, swimming, just keeping swimming…rest day tomorrow, rest day tomorrow…”
I’d packed my swim bag the night before so I picked that up and headed to the kitchen, added my two bottles of water to the side pouches (that I drink in the sauna) and then put the kettle on for my morning coffee – I felt the need to stay standing and not sit at the kitchen table as I felt that would lead to me resting my head on the table and falling asleep. This being the case I stuck my headphones in and turned on a techno podcast to liven me up a bit. The music mixed with the caffeine did the trick and I was soon out of the door into the crisp air with a smile on my face!
I got into the pool and was joined by three other strong swimmers. We quickly got into mutually beneficial rhythms and none of us got in the way of each other, at least for the duration of my workout anyway! It was a pretty good swim, I put in a few hard laps and interspersed these with slower, recovery laps but I was very pleased with my pool mile – I’ve done three timed 66 lap sessions now and each one has been faster than the last so I’m getting used to doing the distance and learning when I need to up the effort level to get the best results!
After my swim I hit the sauna which was completely empty and very hot today! I had to jump out after 20 minutes and take a quick blast under the cold shower – my lightheadedness was a sign that I would have to wrap it up after half an hour and instead of hitting the steam room like I normally would, I’d have to head home and eat some breakfast instead! A rookie mistake – I should have packed a banana or a Snickers for after my swim!
Anyway, a great swim and a wonderfully peaceful half hour in the sauna. I’m beginning to wonder what I’d do without my sauna time – it really does relax and allows me to regain some focus. I think my swim/sauna combination has become an excellent substitute for running at the moment – my feet are almost fully recovered so I guess I’ll be lacing up and getting back out there soon. I figure I’ll give myself a month off the roads and trails so I plan to be out for a gentle reintroductory road run on February 1st or 2nd and we’ll see how it goes from there. Something tells me that I’m going to miss the pool which I never thought I’d say a year ago!
That’s it for today dear reader. Happy Friday to you and thanks for reading through to the end. I hope the weekend treats you well!
Peace & Blessings
