I wasn’t expecting to go out and completely destroy my previous personal best of 18:22! Alas, when I got in the pool a guy training for Ironman was halfway through his Iron distance training swim and really going hard – I decided I’d try and keep up with him and ended up with a huge personal best and, at the end of the swim and few pointers from said swimmer.
Apparently my legs are all over the place and my stroke is slightly short! My new found friend and swim teacher told me that if I slowed my legs down, kicked from my thighs instead of calf/ankle and brushed my thumb against my thigh on every stroke then I have the potential to be a pretty fast swimmer, faster than him in his opinion – this really did buoy me up as he had just completed a 2.4 mile swim in 1:03 and wasn’t even close to his personal best! Something tells me that next year I might focus a little more on my swimming and end up entering a few 1000m+ races. I do so love a challenge!
Anyway, this was a really good workout and an indicator of my fitness level. Clearly I’m ready to rock and roll over in Pisa. Now it’s all about getting the taper right! I think tomorrow I’ll have a rest as my right calf feels a little tight after the hard effort in the pool, Thursday will mostly likely be a long sauna session and then on Friday morning I’ll go out for a slow and steady 5 to 8km – we’ll see what my body says once I start moving. That will be it though! I might just fit in a short jog on Saturday afternoon after arriving in Pisa but in all honesty I think I’ll probably just take the opportunity to amble around slowly and familiarise myself with the city centre sections of the marathon route at walking pace…
