“Running became my secret — another necessity for anyone who seeks his own way in this world. The individual, said Jung, needs a secret to support him in his isolation. So running and its mysteries are my secret. No matter how many times I write about it, the whole truth will never be told.
Running, then, is my discipline, my specialty, my secret. The golden days of perfection on the road are the wholeness that results, or at least the part of my wholeness that is physical. But it is a physical wholeness that fills my mind and soul as well, a physical fitness that anticipates psychological fitness. In those moments, my philosophy becomes, ‘I run, therefore I am.’ And on that basis, I view all creation.”
