As I stepped off the train from work last night I felt a sudden jolt from my L3 spinal nerve down into my knee. Oh dear, thought I.
Fortunately the pain subsided very quickly and I was able to walk the short distance home without too much discomfort and as soon as I got indoors I did 3 sets of 20 lumbar extensions and hoped for the best. I watched two episodes of ‘Orange is the New Black’ whilst lying on my stomach – another tip given to me by my physiotherapist for when the L3 flares up once in a while.
I woke up this morning and before I was full compos mentis that I would not be going for a pre-shift run today. There is a small level of discomfort in my knee which most certainly comes from the L3 being trapped [again]. I had planned to do my long run of between 15-17 miles tomorrow morning but at the moment that plan is on hold – if I don’t feel up to it in the morning I’ll switch over to a mile swim workout in the pool and a long sauna/steam room session coupled with lumbar extensions throughout the day. I’m staying buoyant though and keeping a positive outlook on things, as far as I’m concerned by giving me this signal my body is telling me to lay off the running at least for today. After my last two long runs I know that I’m capable of running, and finishing, my debut marathon just so long as I listen to my body and keep on keeping on!
I’m currently sitting at my Dad’s computer, having used the time I would have spent running to visit with him instead. He will be playing darts with a team later this afternoon so I have lent him my two sets of darts to complement his own. I’m very glad to see him finally getting out and about and socialising as he has spent a long time eschewing contact with anybody but the most necessary of people such as my brother and I and his doctor!
As Porky Pig used to say at the end of Warner Bros cartoons: “That’s all folks!”
