My 100th post and the last run of my 20’s! Tomorrow I’ll be waking up in my 30s and I’m really looking forward to the journey towards my 40s – I’ve got a lot to pack in, that’s for sure!

I enjoyed my run this morning even though I ended up being 4 or 5 minutes slower than usual. I can attribute this tail off in speed to the fact that my right hamstring felt quite tight for most of the run – hopefully this is not indicative of the decline in my running abilities and body composition as I move into the next stage of life!

I was actually talking about life and its general meaning with a colleague today and we both concluded that really what it boils down to is a long, slow process of decomposition – the minute the umbilical chord is cut we begin to die. Now, that sounds depressing but when you think about it for a while it’s not so bad – we all share the same beginning (the umbilical being cut) and the same ending (decomposition) in one way or another. Philosophy and philosophising, what can I say? It’s never been my strong point!

Anyway, I’ve taken steps today to address my unhappiness with my career today. I figured it would be a good idea to get the ball rolling so that I can wake up with a clear head tomorrow morning and the knowledge that I’ve created some doors for opportunity to knock on! So it was that this afternoon, to prepare for my transition into my 30s, I:

  • Registered interest to become a retained Fire Fighter with London Fire Brigade and Hertfordshire Fire Brigade.
  • Began my application to become a Metropolitan Police Constable.
  • Started my application for a PGDip in Mental Health Nursing.
  • Started my research into FdSc/DipHE/BSc in Paramedic Medicine so that I can become an Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic.

and, finally;

  • Started looking into taking my driving lessons with the C1 component so I can drive blue light vehicles.

I’m now really, really looking forward to what the coming year has to bring! At the very least it’s going to be varied: bring on the challenges 🙂

In relation to running I am really looking forward to the first run of my 30s – this will be on Sunday or Monday (I haven’t decided yet, I need to assess my hamstring) and will be a 15 mile long run over mixed terrain: road and trail. With regard to the next 12 months I’m really, really looking forward to doing my first ever ultra in January and then a few more through 2014, I’m even looking forward to the training that comes with ultras. However, it should be noted that I am feeling more nervous about doing my first back to back long runs than I am about the actual races themselves! There’s going to be a lot of ups and downs and new experiences: BRING.IT.ON.
