Workout Soundtrack: Weezer – ‘Blue Album’
10.01km 42:53 (Pisa Marathon Session 11. Intermediate)
I couldn’t make my mind up this morning – trail run or road run? I was uhm-ing and ah-ing for about half an hour over a cup of coffee.
I fancied a trail run because I really, really wanted to head out for one last night when I got back from work – I was inspired to do this because of following the UTMB so closely and because I haven’t been for a head torch lit, off-road run for almost a year! However, I had treated myself to a carb heavy dinner at work and this was still sitting very heavy by the time I got home. Therefore I opted for a shower and an ‘early’ night (if you call going to sleep at 0045hrs early)!
On the other hand, I wanted to head out on the roads because of my new Inov8’s! The Inov8’s won.
I headed out the door with the intention of following my training plan – 5 mile (8km), easy pace. If you hadn’t noticed, it didn’t quite work out that way! I seem to have invented a new pace range for myself and I’ve named it ‘Intermediate’ as it sits between my tempo and long run pace ranges. My first kilometre went by in 4:13 so easy was out of the window straight away – I find it much harder to slow down after the first kilometre than I do to continue at a similar pace to that which I’ve set out on. So, I ran an intermediate 8km between 4:11 and 4:28 per km. I ended up running 10km because I found myself 3km from home when my Garmin sounded off at the 8km mark – I ran kilometre 9 in 4:17 and kilometre 10 in 4:18. I jogged, walked and did some drills on the way home after the 10km was up.
All in all, it was a good workout and I enjoyed finally going past 5 miles in this training block! Regular readers will have probably picked up that I’m getting really impatient with my prescribed training schedule! I have a day off work and a day off running tomorrow so I’m going to sit down and take a long hard look at my plan and make some adjustments to pacing and distance after I’ve been for my swim.
On that note, I’m signing off! Ooh, actually, one more thing – I think I might go for that head torch lit, off-road run when I get back from work this evening 🙂
