Workout Soundtrack: –

3km 13:38

4mins rest & stretching

3km warm down jog

I wanted to go for a long swim today…alas, that won’t be happening as my swim cap, goggles and jammers have yet to arrive in the post! Amazon is great for pricing but it can be so annoying having to wait for the postman only to find he hasn’t got your delivery with him.

My legs, feet and lower back feel like they did when I first took up running back in April 2011. That is to say, I’m feeling a bit tender! It has amazed me how much speed, flexibility, power and muscle tone I’ve lost in six months of slothfulness – never again will I let this happen! With yesterday’s intention to run at least 2km per day still intact I will be doing just that. I don’t recall building up my mileage base taking quite so long last time but I think that’s probably more to do with the weight of my own expectations – patience dear boy, patience!

Some of you out there might now be wondering, Ally, aren’t you training for a triathlon? Why don’t you go out on the bike today instead of running? Well, the answer there is that I have had simultaneous slow punctures on my front and back tyres. My housemate and I tried to find the source of the punctures and came to the conclusion I need new inner tubes so I’m going to take myself down to the local bike shop today and sort that out – in fact, I’m going to take the lazy route and allow them to sort it out for a small fee! I guess this is my first taste of triathlon related mechanical failure and I’m certain it won’t be the last.

So far, I’ve been training for 7 days, starting from scratch and I have to say I have missed the aches, the pains and the slightly euphoric feeling you get when you set out on a path of self-discovery with a view to pushing yourself as far as you can physically and mentally go. It’s been an ad hoc start and I’m hoping over the next couple of weeks when all my kit has arrived, my legs have sufficient miles in them and my bike is in tip top condition that some sort of pattern or routine will begin to emerge – it’ll make it easier for my body to second guess what my mind has in store for it on any given day!
